Geylang International triumphed over Albirex Niigata with a resounding 5-1 victory this evening at Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Eagles took a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime, capitalizing on two defensive errors by the White Swans. Top scorer and former White Swan, Tomoyuki Doi, made no mistake in punishing his old team.
The second half offered no respite for the White Swans. Another ex-White Swan, Ryoya Taniguchi, found too much space at the edge of the box and curled a beautiful shot beyond the despairing reach of Hassan Sunny, making it 3-0 in the 55th minute.
Head Coach Shigetomi had seen enough and decided to shake things up. He substituted the ineffective wingers, Daniel Goh and Arya Igami, with Arshad Shamim and Haziq Kamarudin. Later, he brought on Ho Wai Loon to replace star veteran and former Japanese international, Yojiro Takahagi, to inject some pace into the game.
However, Doi completed his hat-trick in the 73rd minute with a powerful low shot that struck the left upright and found the back of the net, making it 4-0.
Haziq Kamarudin managed to pull one back for the White Swans, showing some determined play from the forward line to restore a bit of respect to the scoreline.
The rout was completed when Zikos Chua outpaced the struggling defensive duo of Stevia Mikuni Egbus and Koki Kawachi, who both had a day to forget, to make it 5-1.
The White Swans will need to quickly put this poor performance behind them and regroup for the upcoming Jurong East Derby this Friday, September 20th. Kickoff is at 7:45 PM.
