10-Men Young Lions Come from Behind to Beat White Swans

Report2024/6/16
Albirex lost 3-2 to Young Lions tonight at Jalan Besar Stadium. The last defeat by the White Swans to Young Lions came in Nov 2015, while Young Lions had not win a league match since Mar 2023.

Newly recruited U21 striker Shingo Nakano opened the scoring in the 28th minute when he brushed aside Young Lions captain and centre back Kieren Teo and swept the ball into the net in the 28th minute.

However, ex White Swan, Kaisei Ogawa's header from a free kick in the 40th minute was deflected into the net by an outstretched leg from Albirex centre back Stevia Egbus Mikuni.

The score was levelled at one a piece going into half time.

Young Lions left back Raoul Suhaimi made a dangerous tackle on White Swan's winger Daniel Goh in the 50th minute. After VAR review, referee rescinded his yellow card decision and sent off Raoul. From the resulting free kick, Shingo Nakano took advantage and regained the lead for Albirex at 1-2.

Although the Young Lions were one man short, the White Swans did not take advantage to extend the lead.

They were made to pay dearly when slack defending allowed Young Lions striker Itsuki Enomoto to steal behind the White Swan's centre backs and equalised.

The White Swans were further stunned when right winger Andrew Aw was left alone in the box and he smashed the ball into the net beyond Hassan Sunny's reach. 3-2, the comeback was almost complete in the 85th minute.

In a desperate move, centre back Mikuni went up to add to the firepower. Mikuni had 2 good chances in the last 5 minutes - one hit the upright while the other was saved superbly by Aizil Yazid, another ex-White Swan.

The Young Lions celebrated wildly at the final whistle while some White Swans slumped to the floor. It was a big slap to the defending champions as they had only themselves to blame for not converting chances and lost a lead to a 10-men bottom side.

The next task could not be easier as the White Swans will visit Bishan Stadium next Sunday 23 Jun to face arch rivals Lion City Sailors. The defending champions will have a chance to show what they are made of.
