DPMM Brunei Overpowers White Swans

Report2024/5/26
DPMM foreign forward trio of Mexican striker Julio Cruz, Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Game and Portugese winger Miguel Oliveira delivered 3 quick-fire goals in 9 minutes in the first half to beat Albirex Niigata 1-4 easily in Jurong East Stadium this evening.

Julio Cruz scored in the 12th minute when Hakeme Yazid broke down the left wing and cut back for Cruz to tap into the net. 6 minutes later, Gabriel Gama extended the lead with a beautiful scissors kick at the edge of the penalty box. Another 3 minutes later, Cruz provided a wonderful through ball to Oliveira that split the White Swan's defence. Oliveira fired his shot past a stunned Kai Yamamoto, who was standing in for the suspended Hassan Sunny in goal.

In fact, the whole stadium and White Swans were stunned by the speed and power of the DPMM Brunei's forward line.

DPMM Brunei eased off after the 3 goals lead and allowed the White Swans to come forward more. However, the Albirex forwards, in comparison to DPMM, were toothless, with only the occasional potshot. Left back Gareth Low put in a few teasing crosses, but the frontline, led by Shuhei "Jumbo" Hoshino, was often a few steps slower, or took too many touches in the box.

Winger Yohei Otake, one of the few better performers for the White Swans, pulled a goal back when his free kick was deflected into the net by a DPMM defender in the 56th minute.

However, all hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished by DPMM four minutes later. Hoshino, who has lost most of his aerial duels tonight, gave away the ball in the White Swan's defensive half and Oliveira took advantage to unleash an unstoppable shot from the right flank that cannoned off the post.

DPMM Brunei was contented to sit back after the goal as they know they were short of match fitness. Their cause was helped by an ineffectual Albirex frontline and they eventually see out the game with no significant danger.

The White Swans will now take a 3 week league break for international tournament. The next game will be against Young Lions at Jalan Besar Stadium on 15 Jun (Saturday). Kick off is 6pm.
