Disallowed Goal and Failed Penalty Fail to Derail White Swans
Albirex returned to the top of the table tonight with a 2 nil victory over DPMM Brunei FC tonight at Jalan Besar Stadium.
Keito Hariya returned to the starting line up tonight since his last start against Tampines Rovers on 19 March which ended up in a 1 nil defeat. He replaced regular centre back Koki Kawachi who was serving a one game suspension following 2 yellow cards in the same game against Geylang International 5 days ago.
The game was a tightly contested affair with DPMM contented to sit back with a 5 men defence and hitting the White Swans with counter attack. Although Albirex dominated possession, the breakthrough only came 4 minutes before half time.
A well-worked move at the edge of the penalty area between Seia Kunori and Shodai Yokoyama released right back Asahi Yokokawa at the right wing. Yokokawa sent in a high cross to the far post and veteran striker Tadanari Lee rose highest to head in the ball.
Albirex went into half time with a 1-nil lead.
The lead was quickly doubled 1 minute after the restart. Substitute winger Riku Fukashiro dribbled the ball past his marker at the left wing and sent a teasing cross into the box. Yokoyama was in the middle of the box and thumped the ball into the net. 2 nil.
The White Swans went in search of the 3rd goal in a bid to kill off the match. Fukashiro had 2 excellent chances one on one with DPMM's keeper. However, Fukashiro could not get the ball past the goalkeeper.

Just as we thought Hariya had scored the third goal with a header from Kaisei Ogawa's free kick in the 71st minute, the goal was ruled out from offside via VAR checks.
In the 83rd minute, substitute Nicky Melvin Singh was pulled down in the box and referee pointed to the penalty spot immediately. To the fan's dismay, Kunori dragged his penalty wide of the left post. The third goal just would not arrive for the White Swans.
Luckily, the White Swans managed to see out the game including a 7-minute additional time due to all the VAR checks for the disallowed goal and penalty.
The victory ensured Albirex returned to the top of the table with 33 points from 11 wins and 2 losses. The league would now take a 2 week international break and Albirex will resume league duties on 24 Jun (Sat) in a Jurong East derby with Tanjong Pagar Utd FC. Kick off is 6pm.
