【Match Report】White Swans Start Cup Campaign with Victory
The White Swans started its Singapore Cup campaign this evening with an easy 4-0 victory over the Young Lions.
Top striker, Kodai Tanaka, drew first blood as early as the 4th minute when he headed in a Masaya Idetsu corner.
A long ball in the 19th minute saw Masahiro Sugita broke free and Young Lions right back Rahoul Suhaimi was deemed to have pushed him from behind. Rahoul was shown a straight red card for being the last defender, and Idetsu duly delivered the goal from the free kick.
Tanaka made it 3 nil at the 36th minute when he penetrated the right wing and sent an unstoppable shot into the net.
The first half ended 3 nil but the score could have been bigger as the White Swans hit the upright twice and had 2 other gilt-edge chances.
In the second half, the White Swans lowered its tempo as Yoshinaga made a number of changes with upcoming games in mind. Sugita scored the only goal in this half in the 74th minute when he received a pass from Kan Kobayashi in the box, cast aside a defender and placed the ball in the far corner of the net.
In truth, the White Swans could have extended the score if not for the upright twice again.
Nonetheless, it was a good work out and important 3 points for Albirex as the other group A match between Lion City Sailors and Balestier ended 3-3.
The White Swans will host Balestier on 31 Oct, Monday at Jurong East Stadium. A victory would ensure qualification for the semi-final stage.
