【Match Report】White Swans End League Campaign with Draw
With the title sealed in the bag, Head Coach Yoshinaga gave goalkeeper Hyrulnizam Jumaat a first league appearance for this season. Nicky Melvin Singh also started along with Ilhan Fandi up front, making 3 Singaporean players starting for Albirex for the first time in history.
The first half ended scoreless with not many goalmouth action.
In the second half, Shogo Toyomura came on for left back Sambongi to mark his league debut. Toyomura had been unfortunate with injuries and will be glad to finally make his mark for the team.
However, Toyomura gave away a penalty after Captain Jun Kobayashi's mistake let Sime Zuzul through on the left flank. Zuzul crossed the ball to the centre, Vincent Bezecourt and Toyomura went for the ball together but Bezecourt probably was a yard faster. Referee pointed to the spot and Zuzul tucked the ball away to Hyrulnizam's right in the 64th minute.
The lead lasted for 10 minutes as good work down the left flank by Masahiro Sugita saw top scorer Kodai Tanaka heading in the delightful cross by Sugita.
The White Swans piled on the attack to find the winner but Geylang held tight.
The night ended with both sides sharing the spoils. The Singapore Premier League trophy and winners medals were awarded to the White Swans after the match to mark the end of the league season.
Next up will be the Singapore Cup tournament, starting against Young Lions at Jurong East Stadium on 27 Oct. The White Swans will hope to win the tournament for a double celebration.
