【Match Report】Depleted White Swans Held by Sailors - 2022 SPL MD4
A depleted Albirex team fought valiantly against Lion City Sailors tonight in a 1-1 draw.
The White Swans were missing star striker Tadanari Lee and left winger Masahiro Sugita due to Covid-19, while Masaya Idetsu and Reo Kunimoto remained injured.
Thus, veteran Fairoz Hasan got his first start for Albirex this evening and became the first Singaporean captain for this Young Albirex team. 2 Under-21 players, Yoshiki Matsuura and Kanato Fukazawa also started for this depleted side.
The first half was a tight affair between the 2 teams with both teams taking pot shots from long distances without troubling the goalkeepers.
At the 43rd minute, White Swans forward Nicky Melvin Singh pounced on a defensive error and forced National Team custodian, Hassan Sunny to push the ball out for a corner on a 1v1 situation.
From the resulting corner, left back Omori Daichi received the clearance outside the penalty box and immediately made a superb curler with his left foot into the net. 1 nil to the White Swans at half time.
In the 2nd half, the Sailors brought on their Belgian winger and later their Korean International striker Kim to chase the equaliser. However, the White Swans defence were largely untroubled by their long ball into the box.
However, at the 89th minute, the referee inexplicably gave a penalty to the Sailors when Kim fell in the box without any Albirex defender touching him. The White Swans appealed in vain, and substitute Gabriel Quak put away the penalty to level up the score.
The referee soon blew the final whistle and both sides shared the point.
The White Swans will next face Hougang on 1 April (Friday) at Hougang Stadium. Kickoff is 7.45pm.
