【Match Report】Valiant Fight in Season Opener - 2022 Community Shield
The White Swans put up a credible performance against last year Champions, Lion City Sailors in the Community Shield this evening.
Despite dominating proceedings for most of the match, Albirex paid for its profligacy in front of goal, with Sailor's Korean international striker, Kim Shin Wook, scoring a beautiful scissors kick in the 87th minute to grab the winner in a 2-1 defeat.
Albirex star striker, Tadanari Lee, converted a penalty in the 14th minute. However, the clinical Kim, headed the equaliser in the 41st minute for the Sailor's only chance in the first half.
The White Swans had a difficult pre-season as the Japanese players arrived in Singapore at different timings due to vaccination requirements for entry permit. Thus the team had only 2 training matches before tonight's season opener.
Thus, this game may have come a bit early for the players as some of them are still finding their feet.
After the match, Head Coach Yoshinaga was full of praise for his charges as he acknowledged the effort his players had put into the match.
The team would now have to regroup fast and prepare for the first league match next Friday, 25 Feb, against Tanjong Pagar Utd at Jurong East Stadium. Kickoff is at 7.45pm.
