The White Swans won its 4th title in 5 years when they beat Hougang Utd 1 nil at Hougang Stadium this evening. The White Swans came into this final match day leading 2nd place Tampines by 1 point. Thus, a victory is essential for the White Swans to clinch the title to avoid other permutations of draw or loss.
Although the White Swans dominated play for the first half, Hougang had the better chances. At the 19th minute, 17 year old Farhan Zulkifli was through on goal after rounding the Albirex goalkeeper, Kei Okawa. However, he slashed his shot wide to the White Swan's relief.
At the 32nd minute, midfielder Ryoya Taniguchi lost the ball in the middle of the park, and Hougang's striker Shawal Anuar unleashes a powerful shot towards goal. Luckily Okawa was equal to the task and parried the ball to safety.
The White Swan's breakthrough finally came in the 52nd minute when striker Tomoyuki Doi pounced on a loose clearance by Hougang right back Nazrul Nazari and released Taniguchi. Taniguchi took one touch and shot into the bottom right corner beyond the despairing reach of the Hougang's keeper. 1 nil to the White Swans.
Hougang poured forward in search of the equaliser and could have found one in the first minute of additional time when substitute striker Shafiq Ghani broke the offside trap. However, his attempted shot sailed just over the crossbar. Albirex supporters' hearts may have skipped a beat during that moment.
The White Swans held out for victory and won its 4th title in 5 years.
