【Match Report】SPL 9th Leg "Hard Earned Victory Against Balestier Tigers"
Albirex earned a hard fought 2 nil victory against Balestier Khalsa FC this evening at Jurong East Stadium.
In a tense first half, both sides cancelled each other out in the midfield with little attacking action in the final third. Thus the first half ended 0-0.
In the 2nd half, both sides continued to match each other like a chess match, trying to outfox each other. The White Swans finally found the breakthrough in the 64th minute when playmaker Nagasawa Ryosuke threaded a neat pass through a crowd of players to left winger Hiroyoshi Kamata, who finished with aplomb into the side netting with his weaker left foot, leaving the outrushing Balestier GK Zaiful Nizam with no chance.
However, after the restart, Balestier's winger Zulfadmi Suzliman had an excellent one-on-one chance with the White Swan's GK Kei Okawa. Just as everyone thought Balestier was going to equalise, the ball inexplicably hit the upright and the White Swans defence gratefully cleared the ball away.
In the 79th minute, striker Tomoyuki Doi put the game safe when he headed in the 2nd goal from substitute Hanada's right wing cross from a corner.
Balestier pushed hard for an equaliser, but the White Swans held firm with good game management for the final whistle.
The 3 points kept the White Swans at the top of the table on goal difference from second place Tampines Rovers who also won this evening 3-1 against Young Lions.
The White Swans will next play third place Lion City Sailors who is on a good run of form, this Sunday 22 Nov 2020, 5.30pm.
