【Match Report】SPL 5th Leg "5 Goals in 5 Games, Nishiguchi Breaks Sailor's Heart in 5-Goal Thriller."
When all seemed lost at the 94th minute, In-form left winger, Reo Nishiguchi, scored his fifth goal in as many games to break the Lion City Sailor's heart to win the game for Albirex 3-2 in Jurong East Stadium.
The White Swans had taken a 2-goal lead in the first half through goals from striker Tomoyuki Doi and attacking midfielder Ryosuke Nagasawa. At the 19th minute, No. 7 Kenta Kurishima played a short pass to left back Hiroyoshi Kamata who swung in a deep cross. Sailor's custodian, Hassan Sunny, inexplicably dropped the ball in front of Doi, who gleefully tapped the ball home.
Nagasawa turned Sailor's Centreback Tajeli in the 35th minute and raced into the box before lashing a powerful shot into the top right corner.. The first half ended in favour of the White Swans 2-nil.
In the 2nd half, Doi had a good chance to extend the lead for the White Swans in the 56th minute, when right back, Kazuki Hashioka laid on a good pass for him. However, Doi shot straight into the grateful arms of Hassan Sunny.
2 minutes later, Lion City Sailors pulled a goal back. Striker Stipe Plazibat lobbed the ball to right winger Saifullah Abdullah who headed the ball backwards to an unmarked Song Uiyong. Song made no mistake with his shot and its game on.
The White Swans seemed to tire and let the Sailors took the initiative. Tricky winger, Gabriel Quak, and ex-White Swan, Adam Swandi were thrown in by Sailor's Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar in search of the equaliser. It came in the 88th minute when Gabriel Quak clipped a shot into the net to stun the White Swans.
However, the White Swans has shown resilience this season with late goals against Balestier Khalsa and Tanjong Pagar. Nishiguchi duly delivered the goods deep into injury time to send the bench into delirium.
The victory propelled the White Swans to the top of the table with 11 points from 5 games.
The White Swans will next visit Our Tampines Hub next week, 31 Oct 2020 to take on Tampines Rovers.
