2019 SPL 9th Leg vs Geylang International FC "Captain Nakamura's Brace Shoots Down Eagles"
Captain Kyoga Nakamura put in a majestic performance for the second game in a row to lift the White Swans into second place in the table, with a 2 nil victory over the Eagles.
The players were eager to make amends for the 1-nil loss to Geylang International in the opening game of the season. However, it was the Eagles who made the early running for the first 20 minutes. Geylang Centreback Yuki Ichikawa had a header saved by the alert Kengo Fukudome. He had scored the winning goal from a similar situation in March as it seemed that the White Swans had not learnt their lessons.
But the White Swans started to take control as the team settled into the rhythm of the game. Debutant Noor Akid Nordin had a good chance to score his debut goal but his shot was blocked by a Geylang defender. Akid had been sidelined by a back injury for almost 3 months.
The first half ended goalless.
The White Swans continued to huff and puff at Geylang's goal in the second half but the Eagles defended stubbornly by packing men in the box. The White Swans dominated the second half totally and their effort started to pay off when Geylang's midfielder, Md Noor Ariff was given his marching orders in the 80th minute.
Sensing the kill, the White Swans poured forward. At the 86th minute, Centreback Kaishu Yamazaki carried the ball into the semi circle and released Nakamura. Nakamura took his chance and curled his shot beyond the Geylang's GK reach. 1 nil, the deadlock is finally broken.
With a one man advantage and a one goal lead, the White Swans slowed the tempo down and passed the ball around to find gaps in the Geylang defence. Nakamura found another chance just outside the penalty box in injury time, and unleashed another left foot scorcher into the net.
2 nil final score.
The team will have a bye in the next round of games and will face leader DPMM Brunei on the 24th May at Jurong East Stadium for a top of the table clash.
